The traditional stone cones and courtyard of Trullo Petrarolo

The history of Trullo Petrarolo

Old stone. A new chapter.

Two original stone cones, thoughtfully restored within a historic working estate. Trullo Petrarolo brings the character of rural Puglia into a private home for today.

From shelter to home

Trullo Petrarolo is believed to date from the mid-eighteenth century, when it may have housed a foreman or head farmer on the neighbouring Petrarolo estate.

Across Puglia, trulli served as field shelters, stores and homes. Their characteristic conical roofs and stone walls connect them to the region’s agricultural past.

Stone, craft and local tradition

Traditional trulli were built from local stone using dry-stone techniques. Their roof pinnacles are often associated with the craftsmen who built them.

A local legend links the dismantling of trullo roofs to avoiding property taxes. It is part of the region’s folklore, rather than a documented explanation for this particular house.

The two original cones

The estate’s account of the building describes the larger cone as a stable, with a mezzanine used to store grain. The smaller cone held a fireplace and served as the family’s kitchen and sleeping space.

A former oven was incorporated into an en suite bathroom. The cistern in front of the house was excavated first, with the resulting stone used in the original construction.

Details that tell the story

The restoration preserved the large stone paving slabs known as chianche, the curved niches and the external staircases that wrap around the cones.

The stairs lead to a rooftop terrace with views towards the Adriatic. These surviving details give the Trullo its individual character.

A new chapter on the Petrarolo estate

Today, the two cones form the heart of a private home with the Lunetta and Ciliegeto suites, living spaces and additional mezzanine sleeping space. A courtyard, shaded dining terraces, garden and private pool extend life outdoors.
